The Inside Story from DNE Staff

The original editorial staff of Daily News Egypt (which you can now follow on @OriginalDNE) would like to inform our loyal readers of the latest developments since the paper stopped printing. We had chosen to not go public with the story and our ordeal out of decency but were today pushed to speak out because we have been denied our most basic right, the salaries for the month of April.

Since we were informed of the owning company’s termination (Egyptian Media Services, which published Daily News Egypt), we were told that we have no financial rights pending, even though this is in violation of the Labor Law. We were informed, however, that we will be paid our full salaries for the month of April. This was noted in the termination letter we were handed on April 22, 2012, in which we were also informed that it would be our last working day. On that day we took our belongings from the office and handed in anything we had, such as a video camera, etc. The next day the locks on the office door were changed.
We left the office and decided to pursue legal action since the company’s liquidator told us we had no rights to severance packages for years of service ranging from two to seven, and this can only be resolved with a court order, thus encouraging us to file a complaint at the labor office for our financial rights. We did so, preceded by a complaint at the Dokki police station on April 24 and have been talking to a lawyer to pursue next steps.
We waited till the beginning of May to obtain our salaries. When we found out that the salaries were ready at the office, we went there to pick them up only to be informed that the editorial staff will not be paid. Other departments in the company got paid.
The owners allege that we have passwords that we have not handed in. This is untrue as everything we had access to was left at the office when we were told it was our last day, including passwords to the wire services which are even written on a whiteboard in the news room. They have full access to all usernames and passwords from our work PCs.
We are not holding any passwords hostage. We want to take this chance to inform our readers and followers that the original DNE staff is no longer affiliated with this brand. We are however, sticking together and forming a new venture.
Please follow us on @OriginalDNE and stay tuned. Your support is highly appreciated.

Daily News Egypt: Final words

Daily News Egypt: Final words
By   Daily News Egypt Editorial StaffApril 22, 2012, 2:46 pm

Last Thursday the editorial staff of Daily News Egypt was informed, quite abruptly, that our last issue was going to be the one which was published Saturday-Sunday, April 20-21, 2012.

After seven years of providing hard breaking news and analysis on Egypt, and being the only independent English-language printed daily in the country, we regret to inform our loyal readers that, as far as the current editorial staff was informed, the paper will no longer be published.

As for the website, a valuable archive of the past seven years of Egypt's history — in politics, business, society, arts, culture and lifestyle; in text, images and videos which the dedicated editorial staff has developed and maintained, we are unfortunately not certain of its fate.

We have specifically and repeatedly requested from the management of the owning company, Egyptian Media Services, to keep the website alive, even if it means that we, the current editors and reporters, have to finance it ourselves. Both ethically and morally, we believe we should be given priority on its ownership.

The team at Daily News Egypt has put their hearts into the paper, working effortlessly and tirelessly together to produce objective, reliable, timely content, always in an amazing work atmosphere of professionalism combined with a friendly and supportive spirit.

Knowing that this is rare to find, the editorial staff of the paper has stuck it out through numerous trials and tribulations. From scarce resources to budget cuts to obstacles that we've overcome together, to uncertain days and nights at the office covering the revolution, never at the expense of the content we provide to readers.

We've grown, in a very organic manner, from merely producing a newspaper to also putting out a website with excellent multimedia content as well as developing a strong social media presence and following, all with the same limited staff.

And the staff members we sadly lost along the way have found greener pastures in the most prestigious news organizations like Al Jazeera, Reuters, CNN and Bloomberg, which ultimately makes us all very proud.

It would be an understatement to say that the editorial team is attached to DNE and to each other; we think of ourselves as a family more than merely colleagues, including those who have come and gone, and especially including our loyal freelancers, contributors and interns.

It's our deep regret to have to disband for the time being and not be able to produce the paper anymore. But we'd like to thank you, our loyal readers, for your support and consistently positive feedback over the years.

We'll Always Have Paris

I usually don't use my blog as a personal diary.. but the past year and a half has been such an emotional roller coaster that most of us became accustomed to only remembering the lows...

But sometimes, when I'm lucky enough, the high moments rise above and the mental image of a happy girl with a big smile on her face take control of my mind's eye..

During a rather short layover in Paris... I had never been to Paris before but decided to make use of my stop and to just jump around the city for quick photo ops and then head back to the airport. I first went to the Champs Elysees which was rather disappointing.. I expected something a lot more glamourous but it was kind of loud, crowded and too touristy for my taste, feeling let down and betrayed by my imagination of what Paris would be like I hopped in a cab and asked the driver to take me to the Eiffel Tower.

The moment I laid eyes on it for the first time... I think I almost had a heart attack! My heart was skipping beats, my jaw either dropped in awe or my smile was too wide, I was too worked up to know for sure what my mouth was doing and my eyes were watering with glee... I don't know what got into me.. But I as soon as I got out of the cab I just stood there for a few minutes... stunned by how beautiful and majestic the Eiffel Tower is.

One day I will go back.. take all the time in the world I need to inhale its beauty :)

The fleeting memory feels nothing but a dream right now.. It all seems so far away!

The Cheesecake Chronicles: Part 2

Makani: Blueberry Cheesecake Tart

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being scrumptiously delicious, I'd rate this one as an 8.

Hands down one of the best cheesecakes I ate in Cairo so far. The cream cheese is extremely rich and smooth (could stand to be a bit thicker though as the layer is a tad thin for my taste). The tart is topped with blueberry compote/jelly which was sufficient, fresh with a bittersweet taste that made for a mouthwatering contrast.

The crust was perfect. It was crunchy, thick and best of all not too buttery.

The only negative aspect about the tart was it being a tart not a cake. I'd enjoy eating an entire slice of their cheesecake as opposed to a small tart sample!

Dark & Twisty?!

Once upon a time I was happy. My memory is failing me with recognizing which wrong turn was the one I took that got me here. The peculiar thing is that once upon another time... "here" is where I fought to be... but for some reason, it seems like this is the wrong place to be and it's also the wrong time.

I am confused, angry, lonely and sad. I don't know how to turn it around except by running away from it all... but will anyone follow me? I'm too much of a chicken to think about the answer.

Maybe I'm just being stubborn, maybe I already know the answers to all my questions but I just don't have the courage to pursue the right path because the wrong one was also the easier one.

I don't know...

I just know I want to be happy again. The "Happiness hit her like a train on a track" happy. Is that ever going to be possible? Or am I forever stuck with being dark & twisty?

Rolling in the Deep

It's a big mess, I'm alone, I'm lost and can't find my way back. I'm scared, lonely and angry.
This is not the way it was meant to happen. I don't know how to fix it.
The pitch black is beginning to become a tad bit too much and I can't bear it anymore.

My 2011

2011 was unique from the very first day... but little did I know it would be a year that would forever change life as I knew it.

We've all experienced what could be described as a spectacular year.. but to each and everyone of us, 2011 has a different meaning and is a different story.

2011 was the year I lived alone for the first time of my life as I spent the first half of it in New York City. New York means a whole lot me.. it's a place where I grew, where I was forced to face myself without the help of anyone & literally make it on my own. But there are too many bitter sweet feelings when I think of the city just because to me it will always be the place I was held up in while my country rose against dictatorship.. the city where I was literally dying inside everyday for 18 days, alone..

2011 was the year when I first felt hope for my country.. prior to leaving to the US I was determined to somehow someday find a way to permanently move to the US even if it was on the expense of family/personal relations. But in 2011 I saw a glimmer of hope.. that maybe, just maybe, we Egyptians can turn things around. (In light of recent events & face offs with SCAF I'd rather not get into the debate of "do u still see hope" because I am incredibly confused)

But it wasn't only hope in Egyptians that I felt in 2011, it was in Arabs generally. I had long given up on my "pan-arabism" fantasies but in 2011 we all united, we united to take back what's ours, to take back our rights, to live in freedom. I salute freedom fighters all over the Arab world this year. Tunisians forced Ben Ali to flee, Egyptians put Mubarak in a cage, Libyans killed Qazzafi and Syrians/Yemenis/Bahrainis started their own uprisings that will surely evolve & the people's will shall prevail. It might be taking longer than expected but I have faith in their strength.

Before 2011, I would watch DNE videos produced by Jon Jensen & Ian Lee and say to myself "WOW! If only I can work with those guys.." In 2011 I landed my first job as a Video Journalist for DNE. I met with Jon and worked with Ian for 3 months during which he was my mentor, friend and guide.

2011 was the year where I first joined protests, either as a Journalist or as a participant, whether pro Tunisian revolution, pro Palestinian struggle, anti Mubarak, anti SCAF... and the list goes on. During these protests I met some of the most awe inspiring humans one could ever meet. Too many names come to mind so it's best not to try & list everyone.

In 2011 I was hit with tear gas canisters for the first time of my life, I was pelted with rocks by CSF/Military Police, I saw dead bodies, I went to the morgue, I visited gunshot wound victims in hospitals, I went inside the Ministry of Interior, I experienced two sit ins, I traveled to small towns of Egypt that I have never been to before and I was there outside the court where Mubarak's trial took place :)

In 2011 3 of my best friends got married, one of whom is pregnant, expecting the first baby girl in our group and her due date is January 25th :)

2011 was beautiful, emotional, harsh, sad, long, messy, unfair, lucky but mostly different. I am blessed to be part of this generation, I am blessed to have come home to take part in the continuation of the revolution... 2011 was only the beginning of an adventure that we're bound to wrap up to our favor...

2011 was just the beginning, I'm ready to say Goodbye & move on and I can't wait for 2012 to bring it on!
